On the first discussion this week we touched base on
Facebook and how we present ourselves to others. A lot of these issues that
stuck out to me. My sister is in junior high and trying to discover who she is,
and trying to create an image for herself so throughout this chapter I thought
frequently about what she is going through. On page 161 the author talks about
facework, which is the “process by which people establish and maintain their
impressions of themselves to others, as well as supporting or denying the
impressions that others are making”. I think a lot of young kids, fall under
this pressure because they want to be seen as cool which leads to giving into
peer pressure. When you usually give into peer pressure your doing something
that you know isn’t who you truly are, but your supporting the impressions or
assumptions people have made of you.

ReplyDeleteI completely agree with your opinion about younger kids falling into peer pressure. You mentioned that young teens typically try to fit in with other kids their age, or even kids that are a little bit older, so they end up doing things that are not good. Now, with all of these social media sites, young teens are posting updates and pictures that are questionable, but to other kids their age, they look “cool”. Peer pressure is a tough act during a young teen’s life, which makes facework very stressful. Great post!

ReplyDeleteI want to start off by letting you know I thought this was a very good blog. Although I chose the other concept for my third post I still enjoyed reading what you had to say. I liked how you wrote about how this chapter reminded you of your younger sister. I also liked the quote you used from page 161, "the process by which people establish and maintain their impressions of themselves to others, as well as supportingor denying the impressions that others are making." Overall, I thought this was a very good blog. Keep up the good work!
I really liked this post because of how true everything is that you were saying. Facework is something we all experience to some extent. Having to do things in order to make yourself look “cool” or socially acceptable can be a stressful thing sometimes. Especially for younger kids in middle school or high school where strong judgment is always passed. I feel as though young kids like thagt should not have to worry about those things but they do. Because of kids dealing with facework I feel they sometimes do horrible things in order to have this wonderful image. Great post.
