Strengths/ Weakness of class

This was definitely one of my favorite online classes. I take online classes to fit in with my busy schedule, however I really dislike them because I like the face-to-face interaction I get in the classroom. What I did like about this class was the professor being easy to talk to, and down to earth. You were able to get a sense of her personality, which is hard with online classes. I also liked the discussions, and how we had to connect to our personal lives because it allowed us to all understand one another better. Meaning, we were able to get a deeper meaning about one another, not just seeing each other as a computer, but more as an emotional human being. I like that in this class we were able to open up a lot and connect to the book using real world examples. When you connect the text with your real lives, for me at least, I understand the content a lot better and I also remember it better.  I think the only weakness in this class, was having to post at three different times during the week and it being 12 hours apart.  I understand the point of it, but it was challenging at times to post three different times and keep track of those three times. I almost rather have two post, that were just longer in length. I would absolutely recommend this class to someone. This class is very beneficial. One of the reasons I am majoring in Communications is because you learn theories, content that you can apply to your everyday life verse like my geology class that I will never apply to my life. I think by taking this class you will learn a lot about yourself as well as how you can strengthen the relationships around you.  I also liked the blog setup better then D2L. At first I was apprehensive about it, because it was new but it is more organized then D2L and is easier to keep track of with all my classes. OVERALL, LOVED THIS CLASS =)

  1. Hey! It was fun reading what you thought about the class. I love online classes because it does give me more flexibility with my schedule and I don’t have to be in the classroom all day. Of course the downside of it is that I never get any face-to-face interaction with any of my classmates. I also love the concept of the class because I believe that the skills that we have learned over this semester were very practical and helpful toward our everyday relationships with people. It was interesting how you brought up the face that one of the weakness of the class was posting three times. I never really thought about it until now, how hard it was to post three times with the twelve-hour time gap. I remember now how there were weeks when I had to wait to post one blog because I wanted to finish early in the week. Anyways, good job this week.

  2. Britt Victoria,
I take online classes to fit in with my schedule as well, and I couldn’t agree more with you when you say that you were able to get a little sense of our professor’s personality through the class. I think her blog helped immensely with that, and I sensed that she actually cared about her students and was passionate about what she was teaching through her positivity through the blogs, returning papers, and in every response to all of my emails. I also agree with you in that the postings were a little difficult since they needed to be 12 hours apart and having to keep track of when I posted things. Overall, I absolutely loved this class as well. :)

  3. Hi,

I definitely agree with your post regarding timing and the 12-hour apart comments because I also wrote about that being somewhat of a challenge. Like you I am also so busy to the point where I hardly even have time for myself and I like to take online classes. Having to keep track of all the comments and the timing was definitely not always easy and I agree with you in perhaps making only two longer comments versus three. However I also enjoyed the material and how we were able to grow personally and learn so much about ourselves, in addition to developing our own personal relationships so much throughout the course. Great job!

  4. This was also one of my favorite online classes. Carol was great, and like you said, very down-to-earth. She was very enjoyable, cordial and forthcoming in regards to email which doesn’t often happen with online teachers. For that I definitely commend her.

I also enjoyed the discussions we did. I felt that we did learn a lot about our classmates by reading each other’s posts. I think that’s the main reason Carol had us make aliases. A lot of personal information went into some of my posts. The real-world applications we did in our discussions taught me a lot more than the book could. You really do have to apply knowledge in order to learn it well. This class did that perfectly.

Like you I also enjoyed the blog set-up. At first it seemed daunting but it was actually very easy and a lot more organized than d2l. I agree that the one weakness to this class is the three posts 12 hours apart. I realize that by taking an online class you must be good with time management, but we are college students living hectic lives and it isn’t always easy to manage our time perfectly. I recommended maybe having to only do 4 posts a week. Maybe the first two posts should be 12 hours apart? Regardless, like you I would definitely recommend this class to my peers. I feel like it teaches very relevant, vital skills that are often overlooked. Overall, a great class.
